October 12th, 1941 : The Night Oldham was Bombed

An Illustrated talk given by John Fidler, on the 80th anniversary.
In 1941, on the evening of 12th October, and the early hours of the following morning, Oldham suffered a direct attack by enemy planes, when abut 20 high explosive bombs (and 5 unexploded bombs) were dropped on the town. Many lives were lost and damage was caused across an area including Chapel Road, Incline Road, Green Lane, Manley Road, Mirfield Avenue, Cranbrook Street and Breeze Hill Road. 27 people were killed, including 4 children, and 47 people injured. A total of 122 homes were damaged or destroyed completely.
This was a terrible night for the local Home Defence services as they dealt with digging out trapped victims; a 40 foot crater, in the Hollins district, with a smashed sewer and a damaged gas main spouting flames; and looking after those made homeless and helpless.
